The first Sable Island Conference – The History and Science of Sable island – is less than two weeks away! There were so many people wanting to share their knowledge and experience about Sable Island that we have a very full program and had to ask some people to wait until our next conference. You will learn many new things about Sable Island on Friday evening May 1 and all-day Saturday May 2, 2015!
Friday night is free admission and includes talks on two recent books about living on Sable Island in the 1800s and the 1900s, a history of the natural history of Sable Island, how Sable Island became a National Park Reserve, and a panel discussion on the significance of Sable Island. Doors open at 6:30pm at Alumni Hall at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This portion of the conference will run from 7:00pm-10:00pm.
Saturday admission is by registration which includes a light lunch and mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. Talks cover the geology, mapping efforts over the centuries, seabirds, songbirds, grey seals, horses, ship wrecks and human presence on Sable Island. There will be posters on the Sable Island seabed, location, vegetation, and a project to create an auditory tour of Sable Island. Also look for various tables by artists and other friends of Sable Island with Sable Island momentos.
