The Friends of Sable Island Society is thrilled that Karen Prentice, Q.C., ICD.D. will deliver the keynote address to open its 2017 conference: The Science and History of Sable Island, on Friday evening, Oct. 20, 2017.

Karen is a Calgary-based corporate director with more than 30 years of combined legal, executive management and governance experience.

Her late husband, The Honourable Jim Prentice, P.C., Q.C., was instrumental in getting National Park status for Sable Island when he was Minister of the Environment. Karen remembers Jim’s thick binder of reports, and many meetings and late night conversations to make it happen.

On Dec. 1, 2013, Sable Island National Park Reserve became officially protected under Canada’s National Parks Act as its 43rd National Park. Parks Canada assumed full administrative control of the island and is assessing its ecological and biodiversity. This assessment will lay the foundation for a park management plan.

Karen’s own connection to Sable Island deepened when she travelled there in July 2017. Her first-hand experience walking on Sable Island’s shores and meeting those who continue to work to protect and preserve it will inspire her keynote address.
